In the internet age, proofreading is a dying skill, falling by the wayside in the mad dash for the finish line. Which is a pity, since even the best ideas in the glossiest brochures can fall on stony ground if readers are sidetracked by careless spelling errors and glaring inconsistencies.
Proofreading should not be confused with copy-editing. While the latter aims to improve the format, style, accuracy and often the content of copy prior to publication, proofreading is the “last line of defence”, eliminating typographical errors before going to print. This calls for eagle eyes, resolute focus and a sound understanding of grammar, punctuation and the publishing process. And this, together with the reliability and quality that is also associated with my translation work, forms the basis of my reputation as a respected English language proofreader.
